different types of ants , Ants are considered one of the social insects. They organize their colonies so well that it is almost like a well-oiled machine. They have levels in their colonies from workers, soldiers to the topmost level which is the queen.  I am sure that you are already familiar with ants. There are different types of ants, from the most common to the rarest one. As of the present, there are 11, 880 species of ants recorded by the biologist.

The most common species of ants are the carpenter ants. You might have seen this ant lurking around your kitchen or dining table. Their main goal is to get food to save up for a rainy day. These ants will build their nests inside old wood that has previous water damage. The carpenter ants size may vary depending on the level they belong too. If the ant is a worker it is measured up to ¼ inch and the queen is ¾ inch. Their species is mostly black in color.

Fire ants are named because of the stinging sensation they leave after they bit you. This stinging sensation is from harmful chemicals and may cause allergies to humans. The sting is most lethal for animals like turkeys and other poultry animals. Fire ants build their nest in the soil. If you look closely at the pictures of types of ants, you will see that the soil has holes where the ants live. Mostly they would choose sunny places to put their nest. The golf courses and parks are particularly vulnerable to these insects. They usually feed on seeds and young plants.

These types of ants inhabit prairies and deserts. This is where they harvest plant seeds for food. Like the fire ants, they will protect their nests by inflicting painful bites to the threat. The seeds are protected by the worker ant. They usually build their nest in grassy areas.

These ants are not like other ants because they tend to run in all directions. Compared to most species of ants that have orderly lines, these ants seem to have no clear purpose or direction. Crazy ants like to stay in the soil of potted plants. If these ants get into the homes, they are hard to control. They like to stay near the cooling vents of electronic equipment that can short circuit the appliances.

As their name implies, they try to rob and get food from other ants’ colonies or nests. They are also known as grease ants because they are attracted to grease. They try to look for high protein food like meats, fats, and oils. They are quite tiny with a measurement of 2mm. Thief ants will invade homes to look for food, but they nest outdoors. They are often mistaken for Pharaoh ants.

These types of ants have large colonies. They put up their nest in cabinets, behind baseboards, behind refrigerator insulation. They prefer to look for a warmer location for their nests during cold weather.

Leafcutter ants are also known as fungus gardening ants. The leafcutter workers snip off a piece of leaf and then carry the leaf bits to their nest. The other ants chew the leaf and use the partially digested leaf as a substrate to grow fungus.

Honey pot ants are generally found in hot climates. They are considered as food by the aboriginal tribes of Australia. The pictures of types of ants will show that their stomachs are engorged. This is where the honey is stored. Sometimes other ants would try to steal the honey pot ants because of their high nutritional value.

Citronella ants release a lemon or citronella-scent like scent when you crush it. The workers are usually yellow in color. Citronella ants may invade homes, especially during mating season. They are more of a nuisance but they will not damage structures or get food from the kitchen.

These ants are tiny. They have dark-colored head and thorax. Their abdomen and legs are almost transparent. With this physical structure, they are difficult to be spotted. They build their nest in tree cavities, under loose bark and underground.

Ants are everywhere. They can be found in different parts of the world. Types of ants [ 1 ] will vary depending on size and colonies. There are still other types of ants. These are just examples of some of the common species of ants that you might find in your backyard or home. Although they are tiny they are still considered a threat to our homes especially when the colonies are large.
